The Four Different Brainwave States

Utilizing binaural beats will allow you to achieve varied states of mind with ease. These differing frequencies allow your brain to tune into different states. These states can assist you with a varying number of items, including assisting in positive thinking, focus, learning, relaxing, achieving a meditative state and many more.

Over the last 150 years, scientists have found that various frequencies can be related to various states of mind. As an example, a frequency of 1 to 3 Hz (Hertz, or the number of changes per minute) may be related to deeper sleep. Binaural beats allow you to listen to a certain frequency to allow you to achieve different states of mind. And today (versus 150 years ago), it’s very easy to change your brainwave frequencies with simply a CD or MP3 player and headphones.

You may be questioning how someone’s mind can achieve such frequencies. This is done by playing two different sounds (one in each ear) at slightly different frequencies. As an example, if a tone at 400 Hz is administered to the right ear, and a tone of 410 Hz is played in the left ear, a “binaural beat” is created as the difference between the two. In the example given, the difference would be 10 Hz.

There are four different categories that are used when discussing the different states. They are referred to as theta, delta, beta, and alpha. You may have heard some of these names before, and they are usually referenced when discussing binaural beats.

The first frequency range is the beta frequencies. This is the range from 13 Hz to 25 Hz. This range is used to obtain a state of alertness, and reduce anxiety and stress.

Next are the frequencies in the alpha range. These frequencies are from 8 Hz to 12 Hz. Positive thinking and the ability to improve your learning can occur in this range. In addition, it also causes a state of slight relaxation.

The third category is the theta frequencies. Frequencies in the theta range are from 4 to 7 Hz. This frequency range can result in increased focus, improved memory, deep relaxation, and is good for meditation.

Finally, the delta frequencies occur at less than 4 Hz. When the frequencies occur in this range, this assists with deep sleep, an increase in immune functions, and loss of body awareness.

From this article you can see that binaural beats can be used to induce an array of mental states. With each of these states, benefits can be had for the listener, even if the listener does not have any prior experience with binaural beats at all. All they require is an open mind.
